Virgen de la Antigua – August

The town's biggest festival is dedicated to the patron saint Virgen de la Antigua and takes place around 9–15 August. The highlight is the procession on land and at sea: the figure of the Virgin is carried from San Cristóbal beach onto a boat and sailed past the cliffs at Peñón del Santo to Puerta del Mar. The festival ends with a grand musical fireworks display over Peñón del Santo. In the evening there is a feria by Río Verde, during the day in Calle Khan Jounes.

According to legend, the procession commemorates a surprise attack on the town, which was beaten back by Don Lope de Valenzuela.
