Food traditions

The cuisine of Almuñécar is the sea, the mountains and the Moors on a single plate: fresh fish from the coast, spices and honey from the Arab era – and tropical fruit from the valleys.

From the sea

  • Moragas – sardines grilled over an open fire directly on the beach, ideally on a summer evening.
  • Espetos – sardines on skewers over the coals.
  • Papas con cazón – potatoes with dogfish, an old fisherman's dish.
  • Sopa de pescado and encebollado de atún – fish soup and tuna in onions.
  • Fritura de pescado – mixed fried fish.

The legacy of the Moors

From the Arab era come dishes such as choto al ajillo (kid goat in garlic), lamb with honey and sweet treats with almonds and honey. The most famous dessert is cazuela mohína – an old dessert of Arab origin, made from bread soaked in milk or from almonds.

Peasant fare from the mountains

  • Migas – fried breadcrumbs or semolina, a winter dish eaten with melon or with pipirrana, a fresh salad of tomato, pepper and onion.
  • Remojón – Granada's salad of orange and salt cod.
  • Calabaza con longaniza – pumpkin with sausage.

The tropical kitchen

The valleys yield cherimoya, mango, avocado and papaya, and local kitchens use them extensively: prawn salad with mango, chicken stuffed with mango and mango sorbet. Read more about the fruit in Food, wine and tropical fruit.

If you want to taste it all at once, come to the town's food festival in Parque El Majuelo in June.
