The Friday market in Almuñécar

This is the market most people at Playa Tropical know – and it is located just over a kilometre away. Every Friday from 9:00 to 14:00, around 200 stalls fill Paseo Blas Infante by the old town. The entrance is at Avenida Fenicia, opposite Lidl and McDonald's. There are three sections: fruit and vegetables from the valleys, clothes and shoes, and homeware and crafts – and at one end, a flea market.

  • Arrive before 10:00. That's when the fruit is best, it's not too hot, and there's room to walk around.
  • Walk there. The surrounding car parks fill up quickly.
  • Take a close look at the goods – quality varies from stall to stall.
  • Watch out for pickpockets in the crowds. Keep your bag in front of you.
  • There is no market during the town festival from 9th–15th August and on some Easter days.

In December, the town also hosts an international Christmas market.

New in 2026: Almuñécar's market hall is back

After six years of closure and a refurbishment costing around 7 million euros, the Mercado Municipal reopened on 28 February 2026 – on Andalusia Day. The historic market hall on Avenida de la Cala has over 40 stalls with fish, meat, fruit, bread and flowers, a bar-cafeteria and an underground car park with 230 spaces. Upon opening, it was open from 8:00 to 15:00.

Go there in the morning when the fishermen have made their deliveries – and buy cherimoya, avocado and mango from the valleys just behind the town.

Summer night markets

  • Almuñécar: every evening in July and August 19:00–24:00 on Paseo de San Cristóbal.
  • Salobreña: Fridays in July and August 20:30–24:00 by Salomar.
  • Motril: Wednesdays in July and August 20:00–24:00 on the promenade by Playa de Poniente.

Thursday in Órgiva

The weekly market in Órgiva, the main town of the Alpujarras at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, is quite special. Every Thursday, people come down from the mountain villages, and the town's many expats from all over Europe sell organic vegetables, cheese, bread, spices, jewellery and crafts side by side with local farmers. There is also a separate crafts market. Combine the trip with visiting the white villages higher up in the Alpujarra.

Nerja: Tuesday and Sunday

Nerja has two markets in the same square at Calle Mirto in the northern part of town: the weekly market on Tuesdays and the flea and antique market – el rastro – on Sundays from 7 am to 2.30 pm. The Sunday market is one of the best on the coast for vintage items, books and curiosities. Finish off with a coffee at the Balcón de Europa.

Thursday in Axarquía

West of Nerja, Thursday is market day: Torre del Mar has one of the largest markets on the entire coast with over 200 stalls, and on the same day there are markets in Vélez-Málaga and in the beautiful white mountain village of Frigiliana.

The town market halls

Motril: Mercado de San Agustín

Motril's market hall is centrally located at Avenida San Agustín – a white building from 1955 with stalls selling fish from the harbour and vegetables from the Vega de Motril.

Granada: San Agustín and Alcaicería

Right in the middle of Granada, next to the cathedral, are two markets that are both well worth a visit. Mercado de San Agustín is the city's market hall with fish, meat, cheese and vegetables from the Vega de Granada – the stalls are open Monday to Saturday 9 am–3 pm, and the gourmet bars stay open well into the evening. A few steps away is Alcaicería, the old Moorish silk bazaar: narrow streets packed with lamps, carpets, ceramics and spices.

Málaga: Atarazanas

Málaga's central market hall was built between 1876 and 1879 by the architect Joaquín de Rucoba on the site where the Moorish shipyard stood in the 14th century. The entrance is still the old Moorish white stone gate with a horseshoe arch, and above the hall is a huge stained glass window featuring motifs from the city. Inside you will find fish, seafood, olives, ham – and small bars where you can have your purchases cooked on the spot.

Good advice for market day

  • Bring cash – many stalls do not accept cards.
  • Bring a shopping bag – or buy one of the classic shopping trolleys at the market.
  • Arrive early – most markets pack up around 2 pm.
  • Haggle a little over clothes and flea market finds – not fruit and vegetables.
  • Taste the fruit – vendors are usually happy to offer a sample.
