The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Bring your blue EU health insurance card and passport or driving licence when visiting a doctor. Without a valid health insurance card, the health centre may demand payment on the spot. Experience from Playa Tropical shows that the health centre will want a copy of both the health insurance card and passport/driving licence – bring a few copies from home.

The blue EHIC/GHIC card does not cover medical repatriation. Always take out travel insurance – see for instance Rejseforsikringsguiden and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' travel advice for Spain.

Watch out for processionary caterpillars

In the pine forests you may encounter long lines of hairy caterpillars moving in a "procession". Keep your hands off: their hairs can cause severe allergic reactions in humans and are particularly dangerous for dogs, cats and small children.

Drinking water

Many buy bottled water. A good alternative is a water filter jug, saving you the trouble of lugging water home. It can be bought in town or at the large department stores in Motril.
