The daytime sea breeze
During the morning, the land and mountains heat up faster than the sea. The warm air over land rises, and cool air from the sea flows in to take its place. This is the sea breeze – la brisa – which typically picks up from mid-morning and is strongest after the hottest hours of the day. The air you breathe on the balcony in the afternoon therefore comes straight across the Mediterranean.
The night-time mountain air
At night, the process reverses: the land cools down faster than the sea, and now it is the air from the mountains gliding down towards the coast. It is called el terral. The mountains close to the coast enhance this daily cycle because they heat up and cool down quickly.
Why it feels good
This daily cycle means the coastal air is constantly renewed – fresh sea air during the day, cool mountain air at night – and the heat rarely feels oppressive.
